<video:title>Santa Maria, Strela do Dia (for treble chorus)</video:title>
<video:description>Treble chorus · 6 minutes · 2023 Commissioned by the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus; Fernando Malvar-Ruiz, music director. Premiere Los Angeles Children’s Chorus; Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, CA (May 9, 2023) Program note Santa Maria, Strela do Dia (Saint Mary, Star of the Day) is cantiga number 100 in the Cantigas de Santa Maria Codex (c. 1250). The Cantigas de Santa Maria — “Canticles of Holy Mary” — are 420 poems with musical notation, written in the early medieval Galician-Portuguese language in the court of Alfonso X of Castile, El Sabio (1221–1284). Most of them are about miracles involving Holy Mary, and the melodies are taken from Gregorian monody, popular lyricism, and the songs of the troubadours. Most adopt the form of a rondo, with a musical refrain repeated after the stanzas. They are notated in mensural notation, a fairly precise system for the time usually reserved for sacred polyphony, which makes it a reliable source for the study of troubadour-type music. The full Galician-Portuguese text and English translation are printed in the score. What you receive PDF score. One license covers unlimited copies for a single choir, for as long as you perform it — no per-copy fees and nothing to re-order. Delivered by email immediately after checkout. <video:title>Bloquea'o (for amplified cello, percussion, and electronics)</video:title>
<video:description>Winner of the Maria Manetti Shrem Daniel Brewbaker Composer Prize. “The performance brought tears to many in the audience and closed with a rousing ovation, a fitting end to an extraordinary event in this top-of-the-world setting." – Olivia Decker on San Francisco preview at the Salesforce tower. Amplified cello, percussion, and electronics · 18 minutes · 2023 Co-commissioned by Festival Napa Valley (Charles Letourneau, Artistic Director) and BODYTRAFFIC (Tina Finkelman Berkett, Artistic Director), with special thanks to Maria Manetti Shrem. Premiere BODYTRAFFIC, SUUVI, and Ricky Matute; The Wallis, Los Angeles, CA (October 6, 2023) Program note Bloquea'o is a six-movement ballet score for amplified cello, percussion, and electronics, created in collaboration with choreographer Joan Rodríguez and cellist and multidisciplinary artist SUUVI. Set during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, the work follows a Cuban immigrant confronting exile, confinement, and the desire to escape. Cuban traditional rhythms, Yoruba chants, electronic beats, historical recordings, field recordings, and lyrical cello writing create a musical landscape in which personal memory and political history continually collide. Recordings of John F. Kennedy and Fidel Castro, alongside José Martí’s writing and sounds from the streets and nature of Havana, become part of the score. The dancers’ voices and movement further transform the music into a living portrait of Cuba — its contradictions, celebrations, losses, and enduring sense of community. Bloquea'o ultimately asks what it means to leave, what it means to remain, and how music can hold both histories at once. What you receive ZIP containing the PDF full score, the live cello part and the live percussion part, plus the electronics playback and its matching click track as uncompressed 24-bit/48 kHz WAV. The playback is everything in the score except the two live parts, and runs continuously for the whole piece. Perpetual license for one ensemble, unlimited performances. The download is large — roughly 600 MB — because the audio is supplied at performance quality. Delivered by email immediately after checkout. <video:title>Buddhist Mantra (for string quartet)</video:title>
<video:description>String quartet · 5 minutes · 2019 Premiere Mivos String Quartet; Boston, MA (March 23, 2019) Program note I took on the challenge of writing a piece that would work as the backdrop to a chant — music that stays ever-evolving and interesting despite being anchored to the fifth that Buddhist monks sing the mantra with. When I sang it with a friend who took me to a meeting, it was in B-flat and F. Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō runs through the whole piece, and the score invites the audience to join the chant if they wish, continuing until the end and fading with the strings. Everything the quartet plays turns around that fixed centre. What you receive ZIP containing the PDF full score and every individual part, print-ready. <video:description>String quartet · 5 minutes · 2019 Premiere JACK Quartet; Boston, MA (October 30, 2019) Program note When I was little, we used to visit grandma at Santander, Cantabria. My mother used to tell us bed stories about a creature called the Ojáncanu, a cruel cyclops found in Cantabrian mythology. They are ten feet tall and have superhuman strength, with ten fingers on each hand. However, there was also another creature, a tall and kind being that played a long flute, who protected us from any danger in the middle of the forest. I was no longer afraid of the dark. Premiere Hila Plitmann, Antonina Styczen, SUUVI, Robert Thies; Schoenberg Hall, Los Angeles, CA (May 19, 2022) Program note A Sephardic woman living in late 15th-century Granada finds herself pregnant and on her own after her husband and loved ones are forced to leave Spain by the Catholics. Prosecuted and marginalized, she hides at the caves of El Sacromonte. The day she gives birth, she leaves her baby unattended to search for milk, for she is too weak to breastfeed. After many struggles and getting arrested, she manages to return, but it’s too late. She finds her baby still and cold — weakened by hunger, the newborn had stopped breathing. <video:description>Soprano and piano · 8 minutes · 2018 Premiere Laura Virginia Pernas, soprano; Pedro Osuna, piano; Boston, MA (December 10, 2018) Program note Thinking about my childhood means thinking of Lorca. I remember acting his plays in school, singing his songs in the choir, and sometimes being lucky enough to hear flamenco cantaoras sing his words on our Sunday walks in the Albaycín. I also think of our literature classes next to the river where Antonio would tell us about Lorca’s tragic death. <video:title>Immortality (for children's chorus, cello, and piano)</video:title>
<video:description>Children’s chorus, cello, and piano · 4 minutes · 2025 Commissioned by the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus. Premiere Los Angeles Children’s Chorus; Pasadena Presbyterian Church, Los Angeles, CA (May 12, 2025) Program note In the winter of 2017, while I was living in Boston, my friend Mason read me Clare Harner’s Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep to me. It was past midnight at the Conservatory, and I was sitting at the piano when he asked me to play something that felt like the poem. I began improvising, and, as if by instinct, our friend Angie started singing the words after a short piano introduction. A piece was born. The poem’s simple yet profound comfort in the face of loss has stayed with me ever since, along with the melody and that night. Recently, when I couldn’t sleep, I kept hearing the same melody and knew I wouldn’t sleep until it left my body. I instantly thought of my friends at my favorite children’s chorus on planet Earth, the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, and of course stayed up all night. I hope this music offers a moment of peace, a sense of continuity, and the reassurance that love and memory never fade. What you receive PDF full score plus the cello part. <video:title>Violin Soliloquies (for solo violin)</video:title>
<video:description>Solo violin · 8 minutes · 2021 Premiere Xenia Deviatkina-Loh; Schoenberg Hall, Los Angeles, CA (February 22, 2022) Program note The theme that ties the four movements together comes from my first ever collaboration with a director — a short film my friend Anna Kotyza made, and I scored, when we were in our late teens studying in Boston. It stayed with me long after the film was finished, and I wanted to turn it into something that could stand on its own. A soliloquy is speech alone on a stage: thought made audible, with nobody to answer it. That is what the unaccompanied violin does here across four movements — the same idea returning in four different lights, by turns sustained, restless, and inward. To the memory of Juraj Filas, with special thanks to the Kotyza family. What you receive PDF score, print-ready. Perpetual license for one performer, unlimited performances.
