Violin Soliloquies (for solo violin)

Violin Soliloquies (for solo violin)

SKU: PO-VIOLIN-SOLILOQUIES

Solo violin · 8 minutes · 2021

Premiere

Xenia Deviatkina-Loh; Schoenberg Hall, Los Angeles, CA (February 22, 2022)

Program note

The theme that ties the four movements together comes from my first ever collaboration with a director — a short film my friend Anna Kotyza made, and I scored, when we were in our late teens studying in Boston. It stayed with me long after the film was finished, and I wanted to turn it into something that could stand on its own.

A soliloquy is speech alone on a stage: thought made audible, with nobody to answer it. That is what the unaccompanied violin does here across four movements — the same idea returning in four different lights, by turns sustained, restless, and inward.

To the memory of Juraj Filas, with special thanks to the Kotyza family.
