Program note

Santa Maria, Strela do Dia (Saint Mary, Star of the Day) is cantiga number 100 in the Cantigas de Santa Maria Codex (c. 1250). The Cantigas de Santa Maria — “Canticles of Holy Mary” — are 420 poems with musical notation, written in the early medieval Galician-Portuguese language in the court of Alfonso X of Castile, El Sabio (1221–1284). Most of them are about miracles involving Holy Mary, and the melodies are taken from Gregorian monody, popular lyricism, and the songs of the troubadours. Most adopt the form of a rondo, with a musical refrain repeated after the stanzas. They are notated in mensural notation, a fairly precise system for the time usually reserved for sacred polyphony, which makes it a reliable source for the study of troubadour-type music. The full Galician-Portuguese text and English translation are printed in the score.
