Program note

Thinking about my childhood means thinking of Lorca. I remember acting his plays in school, singing his songs in the choir, and sometimes being lucky enough to hear flamenco cantaoras sing his words on our Sunday walks in the Albaycín.

I also think of our literature classes next to the river where Antonio would tell us about Lorca’s tragic death. He was murdered by Franco’s dictatorship on a Tuesday, for being gay, a socialist, and maybe a freemason.
