Program note
In the winter of 2017, while I was living in Boston, my friend Mason read me Clare Harner’s Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep to me. It was past midnight at the Conservatory, and I was sitting at the piano when he asked me to play something that felt like the poem. I began improvising, and, as if by instinct, our friend Angie started singing the words after a short piano introduction. A piece was born.
The poem’s simple yet profound comfort in the face of loss has stayed with me ever since, along with the melody and that night. Recently, when I couldn’t sleep, I kept hearing the same melody and knew I wouldn’t sleep until it left my body. I instantly thought of my friends at my favorite children’s chorus on planet Earth, the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, and of course stayed up all night.
I hope this music offers a moment of peace, a sense of continuity, and the reassurance that love and memory never fade.
