Program note

I took on the challenge of writing a piece that would work as the backdrop to a chant — music that stays ever-evolving and interesting despite being anchored to the fifth that Buddhist monks sing the mantra with. When I sang it with a friend who took me to a meeting, it was in B-flat and F.

Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō runs through the whole piece, and the score invites the audience to join the chant if they wish, continuing until the end and fading with the strings. Everything the quartet plays turns around that fixed centre.
